The San Juan Islands, a cluster of about 700 rocky islands, from which only 60 are inhabited, are located in the Pacific, off of the northwest Washington coast, just south of the Canadian border.
Shadowed by the Olympic Mountains, The San Juan Islands enjoys a moderate and dry climate, with only 29 inches of rain a year.
The main four Islands, Orcas, San Juan, Lopez, and Shaw are accessible by water and air, with a regular ferry service from both Anacortes WA, and Sidney BC.
Lopez Island is best known for its flat geography, which makes it easy to explore by bicycle. Shaw Island, a camping destination, has no facilities whatsoever other than one small convenient store making it a favorite among outdoor adventure seekers.
Hotels in the San Juan Islands are located in Deer Harbor and Eastsound on Orcas Island, which is best known for its small historic settlements, and in Friday Harbor, on the east side of San Juan Island, the biggest of the islands, which is best known for whale watching.
